, provides financial management and support
to both Nursing and Finance staff at each of the Barnabas Health
affiliates.
Patient Care Services Departments make up more than 50% of each facility’s
operating budget expense. In this ever-changing health care environment,
it is crucial that nurses actively control expenses, both labor and
supplies, while continuing to provide quality patient care.
The Corporate PCS Finance department, in collaboration with each facility’s
Nursing Finance Director or representative, has implemented standard
methodologies and tools to effectively deal with each phase of financial
management:
- Planning each year’s operating
budget. This includes ensuring staffing patterns
that meet the needs of each patient population
and the dollars to support those labor hours.
- Monitoring financial results each
pay period. This includes comparisons to volume
flexed budget as well as to static budget, and
comparisons to like units across Barnabas Health and
nationally.
- Controlling financial results by initiating
change to accommodate trends in volumes, acuity
and availability of staff.
- Evaluating initiatives in a quantifiable
manner to determine their operational effectiveness.
Creativity in problem solving and development of new ideas are shared
amongst the system’s Finance Directors at regular meetings as
well as through the consultant/advisor service provided by the Corporate
staff.
