BARNABAS HEALTH COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

CHARGE NURSE WORKSHOP
This course is intended for anyone who assumes the role of charge nurse regardless of whether this role is permanent. Content includes delegation; how to assign correctly; chain of command; legal issues; priority setting and managing your shift.The program concludes with case studies that allow participants to apply concepts discussed throughout the day to practical, realistic situations.(Contact hours provided)

PRECEPTOR WORKSHOP
This program is intended for nurses who are new to the preceptor role.The program includes review of reality shock; principles of adult learning; principles of evaluation; correct completion of forms used in orientation (skill checklist, daily progress record, etc); constructive feedback.Case studies at the end of the program assist participants in the assimilation of information presented.(A similar version of this course is offered for non-professional nursing staff - nursing assistants, respiratory therapists, techs, etc. - who may also function in a preceptor role for their respective specialties).

BASIC DYSRHYTHMIA COURSE
This course is a prerequisite to the Critical Care Course. Content proceeds from anatomy & physiology of the heart and electrical system, to hands-on rhythm interpretation. Participants must demonstrate competency in rhythm interpretation prior to taking the critical care course.This program is also appropriate for staff who want a review of dysrhythmia interpretation.

CRITICAL CARE COURSE
This course is appropriate for all nurses who are new to critical care areas.The course is presented in modular format and can be attended in its entirety or participants may choose to attend selected modules as appropriate to their needs. Basic dysrhythmia interpretation is a prerequisite to this course. (Contact hours provided for each module).

12-LEAD EKG COURSE
This program appropriate for any nurse who wishes more in-depth knowledge of EKG interpretation.  Included is identification of myocardial infarction, bundle branch blocks, axis deviation, etc.

TRIAGE COURSE
This course reviews the principles of triage. Topics covered include triage acuity, clinical modules, mechanism of injury, pediatric triage, legal issues of emergency department nursing and EMTALA laws.The course is appropriate as a review for nurses currently working in triage as well as an introduction for those who are new to the triage area of the ED.

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT COURSE
This modular course is designed as an introduction to ED nursing for the inexperienced nurse.It can also serve as a review for incumbent ED nurses. Topics include cardiovascular, medical, orthopedic, neurological, obstetrical, psychiatric emergencies, as well as toxicology and legal/EMTALA issues.  

IV THERAPY COURSE
This didactic and clinical practice course was designed by the Northern New Jersey Consortium of Nurse Educators. After successful completion of the course, participants must have a precepted experience at their own facility, completing a number of IV starts on patients as defined by their facility policy on IV therapy.  

PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT COURSE

Two different physical assessment programs are offered:

• Newark Beth Israel Medical Center

MED/SURG COURSE
Current concepts in med/surg nursing are included in 2-day program.

ONCOLOGY ORIENTATION PROGRAM
This oncology course is designed for the nurse who is new to oncology nursing.It includes care of the oncology patient; venous access devices; oncologic emergencies; knowledge of chemotherapeutic agents; principles of chemotherapy administration and alternative treatment modalities.This course prepares the participant to complete a 2-day chemotherapy administration clinical competency (Contact hours provided).

PERIOPERATIVE COURSE
This is an intensive course that serves as an introduction to perioperative nursing.  It is appropriate for nurses who are new to perioperative nursing as well as graduate nurses who wish to make perioperative nursing their specialty. Didactic content in most surgical specialties is reinforced with clinical observation and hands-on practice as appropriate. Participants who complete this program will go on to an intensive precepted clinical experience in their own facility, which will prepare them to function independently as perioperative nurses.

PERIANESTHESIA (PACU) COURSE
This course is appropriate for incumbent staff and nurses new to the perianesthesia specialty. Topics include standards and scope of perianesthesia nursing, anesthetic agents, pain management, latex allergy management, patient assessment and surgical procedure review. (Contact hours provided)

BASIC FETAL HEART MONITORING
This program includes the information required by the nurse who will be working in any labor and delivery area that uses fetal heart monitoring.This course is based on the AWHONN standards of practice and is a pre-requisite to intermediate and advanced fetal monitoring programs.

PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE COURSE
This program covers topics needed by any nurse working in a pediatric intensive care unit. Content includes nursing management of the pediatric patient who presents with cardiac, respiratory, neurological, disorders and other health problems.

CARING FOR THE PEDIATRIC PATIENT
This is a program intended for nurses who work primarily with adult patients, but who occasionally care for pediatric patients (ED, SDS, PACU, OR, GI/Endo).The focus of this program is the differences in the presentation, assessment, treatment and evaluation of these patients as compared to the adult patient.

PEDIATRIC HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY PROGRAM
This is a course which is appropriate for any nurse who cares for a pediatric patient with cancer, either in an in-patient or outpatient setting. Content of the course includes pediatric cancers, chemotherapy, administration techniques and management of side effects/complications.
